Southborough Road

This extension was built using a highly insulated breathing-wall technology. Externally the new walls are clad in hydraulic lime render: a traditional material being used in a modern setting. The new room has a roof of translucent, insulated glass, which flood the tranquil space with light.

We have extensively refurbished a three-storey mid-Victorian terrace house close to Victoria Park. The house required modernisation of all services, the fitting out of a new kitchen, full decoration, and extension to provide two additional bedrooms, new bathrooms and a utility area. A loft extension and a single storey extension to the existing two storey back extension was built using an engineered timber frame with cellulose insulation far in advance of current thermal requirements of the building regulations. In the new loft room, externally, the back wall was clad in slates with all other walls and the roof clad in terne-coated stainless steel, chosen for its neat appearance and very long maintenance-free life. A secret gutter at the top edge of the new extension maintains the crisp modern appearance. Internally a master bedroom with an en-suite shower room carefully maximises the section to allow a top floor flooded with light.

Light too is a dominant feature of the new bathroom in the first floor extension. Here the roof is translucent, insulated glass, externally lit. The space is designed to restore tranquillity to a hectic lifestyle. Externally the new walls are clad in self-coloured, hydraulic lime render: this very traditional material being used in a modern setting. The rationale throughout the house has been to restore the remaining original features whilst new insertions are modern.
