The original Victorian house was unusual in so far as it had an existing former workshop at ground level and was double fronted above. We divided the workshop to provide a utility area, a single garage and a children’s playroom/study with a mezzanine. Upstairs extra storage was added and the bathroom was re-modeled. A new infill back extension contained a new WC and a glass-roofed area off an extensively re-modeled kitchen. A play in new natural light sources; including roof lights, windows and a glass block wall resulted in a spectacular modern space. We were later asked by the client to add a new bedroom and shower room in the roof. The ceiling to the room at the back of the house was lowered; this provided a bed platform area at the front. The work was completed using a timber framed, highly insulated, breathing-wall construction.
