At the time of our involvement Lauriston Primary School was a small single-storey single entry, primary school in Hackney, London. Now it is a large new two-year entry school on the same site. Originally the school was very overcrowded and temporary classrooms had been built to help. Funding became available so that schools could be extended so that the use of temporary classrooms was not necessary. In the reception class the children are still taught primarily through play, so JWA proposed to provide a new flexible, friendly reception room and convert the former reception classroom for year 1 pupils. An ‘external room’ was also created; this area was separated from the main playground with its own fence and gates. Though now demolished working on the school was invaluable experience as we learnt to successfully interpret the teacher’s aspirations in the way that they felt it was best to teach young children.
