Elsden Mews

Elsden Mews is a new build home in a conservation area in Bethnal Green, London. Sited in a former mews between two Victorian terraces, the new house is set at the back of the site, creating a south facing entrance courtyard. Externally, the house combines hand made bricks with a sleek curved wall of glass blocks which define the entrance. The roof, designed to minimise the over shadowing of neighbouring gardens, is of patinated copper. Internally, the dining area, study and bedroom open into the generous double height living room which, flooded with light from a glass roof, provides the focus of the design. The building is designed to be extremely energy efficient. Triple glazed windows are used. Rain water is collected for re-use and low temperature under floor heating ensure high levels of comfort and low fuel bills. The house was completed in September 2002.
