Lavers Road

The original two-storey Victorian house was re-modelled to make it more flexible and suitable for family life. An existing former workshop, connected to the main house, was divided to provide a utility area, a single garage and a children's playroom with a mezzanine. Upstairs extra storage was added and the bathroom was re-modelled. A new back extension contains a downstairs cloakroom and provided a glass-roofed area off an extensively re-modelled kitchen. A play in new natural light sources, including roof lights, windows and a glass block wall has resulted in a spectacular modern space. The external materials have been chosen to minimise the impact of the scheme, but internally, high quality, sleekly detailed materials provide a bright, modern ambience and ensure that the money was spent on items that the clients would touch and enjoy every day. A tapered, dark-green limestone worktop dominates the bathroom. Bespoke shelving behind the basin provides lights each side of a mirror, and ensures the clutter of modern life can be kept in order. The first phase was completed December 1999.

We were later asked by the client to look at the design of a new bedroom and shower room in the roof space. The resulting loft rooms were built within permitted development rights. The ceilings to the rooms at the back of the house were lowered so that the ridge did not need to be raised to achieve comfortable headroom; this provided a bed platform area at the front of the new room. This work was completed using a timber framed, highly insulated, breathing-wall construction, as developed by JWA in other projects. The second phase was completed September 2001.
